Job Title: Dishwasher
Department: Kitchen / Food Service
Reports To: Executive Chef, Sous Chef, Kitchen Manager, or Lead Dishwasher (depending on the establishment)
Summary:
The Dishwasher is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of all kitchenware, including dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and equipment. This role is crucial for ensuring a hygienic and efficient kitchen operation. The Dishwasher also assists with basic cleaning tasks within the kitchen and may perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Dishwashing and Cleaning:
    • Operate and maintain dishwashing machines, ensuring proper water temperature and detergent levels.
    • Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, pans, and other kitchen items thoroughly and efficiently.
    • Hand-wash delicate items and large equipment as needed.
    • Ensure all items are properly rinsed and sanitized according to established procedures.
    • Stack and store clean dishes, utensils, and equipment in designated areas.
  • Kitchen Maintenance and Sanitation:
    • Keep the dishwashing area clean, organized, and free of clutter.
    • Empty and clean trash cans and recycling bins.
    • Sweep and mop kitchen floors and other work areas.
    • Clean up spills and messes promptly to prevent accidents.
    • Assist with the general cleaning of the kitchen, including wiping down counters, cleaning sinks, and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
    • Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs to the supervisor.
    • Perform basic cleaning and maintenance of the dishwashing machine.
  • Teamwork and Assistance:
    • Assist other kitchen staff with basic tasks as needed, such as putting away deliveries or prepping ingredients (depending on the establishment and workload).
    • Communicate effectively with other kitchen personnel to ensure a smooth workflow.
    • Follow instructions from supervisors and chefs.
  • Adherence to Safety and Hygiene Standards:
    • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines.
    • Adhere to all food safety and sanitation regulations.
    • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Qualifications:
  • Education and Experience:
    • No formal education is typically required.
    • Previous experience as a dishwasher is often preferred but not always necessary; on-the-job training is usually provided.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Ability to operate dishwashing equipment safely and efficiently.
    • Basic understanding of cleaning and sanitation procedures.
    • Ability to work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
    • Good physical stamina and ability to stand for extended periods.
    • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
    • Basic communication skills.
    • Attention to detail and a commitment to cleanliness.
    • Ability to work well as part of a team.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy items, such as racks of dishes and bus tubs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and reach frequently.
  • Ability to work in a hot and humid environment.
  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Tolerance for exposure to cleaning chemicals and hot water.
Work Environment:
  • Kitchen environment, which may involve exposure to heat, steam, water, and cleaning chemicals.
  • May work evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on the establishment's operating hours.
